The Suroundings

Le dolmen de Le Mas d'Azil Barané is in the South of France, in the foothill of the Pyrenees, in the wild and well preserved nature of the Regional Natural Park of the Ariège. In the land of the Cathare, we are at 8 km of Le Mas d'Azil, with its prehistoric cave - biggest of Europe; 80 km from Toulouse, known as "the pink town"; 110 km Chateau de Carcassonne from the medieval city of Carcassonne; near Andorra and the Spanish border. The high mountains are not far off, offering many possibilities of hikes and other sports.

Also the surroundings are ideal for walks, bicycle rides... the small quiet roads around here meander through the pleasant hilly landscape, with its meadowsBallades sur le domain du Gite Barané boarded by forests. Here and there you will come to a small farm or village.

The St Jacques paths and the GR 78 follow the northern border of the domain. Many activities and outings await you: visits of prehistoric caves, Cathare castles, medieval villages and towns with their markets, thermalism, star watching, swimming, fishing, cycling, climbing...

You can discover the diversified wild life and flora on the domain. To the North, a path leads up to the top of the Plantaurel (600 m altitude). Chateau de Foix From here you have a splendid view on the high mountain tops of the Pyrenees. To the South, the small river "Lèze", coming from the nearby lake "Montdély", meanders along the bottom of the domain. In the autumn you hear the bell of the stags in the nearby woods and what a surprise for the walker to come suddenly face to face with some dear or to see the fox in the distance, to discover bird's nests, rare orchids, mushrooms...
